Im sitting in an ER waiting room listening to a guy explain to his friends family that his friend was riding a motorcycle like a moron (his words not mine) and hit a car head on. He was concious and wearing a helmet (rare in Illinois because the state doesn’t mandate them) but both arms are broken as well as a bunch of his ribs and this guy is really broken up about it. If you do ride just be careful

Jeez. Head on with a car and survived. That’s great and hopefully he learns.
And a tip of the cap to the engineers and makers of th e helmet.

When I broke my arm, If I recall correctly, the woman next to me in the ER was being told she’s been paralyzed do to an injury, she was crying out loud. It was disheartening.

Aso - don’t ride like a moron. Don’t ride above your skill level. Don’t ride bikes that you aren’t ready for. You fool no one. I admit I’m a casual rider still so yeah I ride a much easier going bike. I see you out there Mr. Rides-twice-a-year on your Harley, duckwalkng through the intersection while American flags made in China wave off the large saddlebags and fairing as the behemoth of a bike you can’t ride lurches forward before you gun it hard after you find some footing. And same goes for you, Mr. My-friends-make-fun-of-250cc-so-here-i-am-on-a-gixxer 600. I know you didn’t mean to pop the front tire. I also know you didn’t mean to slide out the rear when applying the brakes. Good thing your white t shirt and basketball shorts prevent road rash. Oh wait...
I cant believe people find riding fun when they ride so badly like that. It isn’t fun when it’s work. But then again I have no problem looking like a space cadet in high viz oants, armored jacket, and big ol helmet. Oh and high viz gloves so people can see it if I make a hand signal (underrated safety gear).

I don’t remember who said this, but it’s stuck with me for decades. He said that he would ride until he stops being afraid, then he’d sell it and buy another one a few years later. Rinse, repeat.

Riding into oncoming traffic usually counts as riding like a moron. I was coming through a canyon once, and traffic was stopped dead. This is very unusual in this remote area . Turns out a motorcyclist was riding through the canyon, leaned over in a corner with his head in the oncoming lane. He hit a Tacoma with his head. I’m not sure if he lived or not but it’s a good reminder to be careful.

That’s terrible....glad the fellow is surviving RELATIVELY unscathed (i.e. no brain damage / paralyzation
or something terrible. I can’t imagine what the friend making the call is feeling like...
That being said, re: the guy who head-on-ed the car while riding like a moron....play stupid games, win stupid prizes...hope he learns a very important lesson after this one...he also could’ve killed or seriously injured those in the car he hit if the bike had gone through the windshield...

tbf it can happen even if you’re not acting like a moron. my first time out on the road (i.e. the first time I went faster than 20 mph) we were on a two lane, 45-mph road. around a curve, I in my n00b-ness forgot the cardinal rule of “look where you want to go, not where you are” and crossed over the center line. because- of course- I was looking at the center line while trying not to cross it.
thankfully we were on a very lightly traveled road and I didn’t eat anything other than a bit of my pride.

Target fixation gets everyone sometimes. At least you learned your lesson and it didn’t cost you anything.

Jesus... I live in the hilly part of Ohio and I’ve stopped trying to apex in my car around left curves. If I pass a car going the other way, they’re almost always left of center. So many drivers have no awareness or skill.
